Prof. Charles Ofosu Marfo (born September 16, 1970), is a Ghanaian academic and linguist who hails from Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Prof. Marfo is a prolific researcher and has extensively published on diverse topics related to his fields of expertise. He is currently the Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG). Education
After completing his early education in Ghana, Prof. Marfo went on to pursue higher education. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguisti cs and Philosophy from the University of Ghana, Legon in 1997. Building on this foundation, he furthered his studies overseas and received his Master of Philosophy in Theoretical Linguistics, with a focus on Phonology and Morphosyntax, from the University of Tromsø in Norway in 2001. Prof. Marfo then attained his PhD in Linguistics, specializing in Theoretical Linguistics, particularly Phonology and Morphosyntax, from the prestigious University of Hong Kong in 2005.
Career
Upon completing his PhD, Prof. Marfo began his teaching career as a Lecturer at the Department of Modern Languages, KNUST in 2006. He rose through the ranks to become a Senior Lecturer in 2011 and an Associate Professor in the Department of Language and Communication Sciences in the same institution.
In addition to teaching, Prof. Marfo has taken up various administrative responsibilities at KNUST. He served as the Head of the Department of Modern Languages from 2012 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2016. Subsequently, he was appointed the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 2016 to 2018, and the Vice Dean from 2018 to 2020. Currently, Prof. Marfo is the Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, overseeing academic affairs in the college.
Beyond KNUST, Prof. Marfo has been actively involved with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). He was the President of the KNUST branch from 2019 to 2021 and became the National President of UTAG in 2021, advocating for the welfare of university teachers in Ghana.
Prof. Marfo has also made significant contributions as a researcher. He has extensively published books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings on diverse topics related to his expertise in linguistics, communication studies, literature, and African studies.
Awards and Honors
Prof. Marfo’s academic excellence and service have been recognized through several prestigious awards and honors. These include the Quota Programme Fund from Norway (1998-2001), the Postgraduate Studentship from the University of Hong Kong (2001-2005), the Best Lecturer Award at KNUST (2013), and a Visiting Professorship from the German Academic Exchange Service at the University of Potsdam (2014-2015).
